- The winners of the International Landscape Photographer of The Year 2025 competition have been announced

- Lukas’ favorite camera was the Canon EOS R5
The winners of the International Landscape Photographer of The Year 2025 competition were announced this week, and the cameras used by the winners are known.
Take the overall winning photo, a prehistoric-looking scene of a snow-capped mountain in New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand, taken by Austrian photographer Lukas Trixl.
Lukas took this stunning image with the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera, which he pairs with the Canon RF 14-35mm F4 IS USM, Laowa 12mm Zero-D f2.8, Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 and Canon RF 200-800mm lenses, after upgrading from the Canon Rebel T7 DSLR (known as the EOS 2000D outside of United States) years ago.
This news follows the 2025 Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, which were also dominated by the EOS R5 – although the overall winner of that competition used an 11-year-old DSLR, the Nikon D810.
The other major prize at ILPOTY 2025 was the winning portfolio of J. Fritz Rumpf, who used the Nikon D850 DSLR, Nikon Z7 II mirrorless and DJI Mavic 3 drone for his wide selection of landscape photos.
So there’s a theme that connects these competition winners: don’t dismiss old professional equipment. The EOS R5 is still a great camera, despite being five years old and having been replaced by the EOS R5 Mark II, and the aforementioned DSLRs are even older.
And there’s good news if you’re considering such competitions but need top-notch equipment to help you make your vision a reality: you don’t need to spend a lot of money. For example, the Canon EOS R5 dropped to record prices following Black Friday sales, and given that it’s now an older model.
Today’s best Canon EOS R5 deals
Released in July 2020, the Canon EOS R5 remains a popular camera among professionals more than five years later – certainly if the major photo competitions of 2025 are anything to go by. Its compact, sturdy body, sharp 45 MP still images, powerful in-body image stabilization and reliable autofocus are among the many attributes that make it a premium camera for professional photographers. The EOS R5 has dropped about 35% in price since its launch, making it a great buy today.
