Thousands of NGOs work unattended

Islamabad:

The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on poverty reduction and Social Security was informed Tuesday that more than 18,000 NGOs operate nationally, but only about 1,000 have been officially recorded, the vast majority flying under the radar.

The Committee has expressed serious concerns about the presence of unregistered NGOs, which mentions them a potential threat to sensitive national issues and recommended the formulation of a national framework to regulate the sector.

During the meeting, the officials also informed the Progress Committee of various social protection projects, in particular with regard to the deadlines given for their completion.

The committee has seriously expressed delays in terms of execution time and required greater responsibility.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the incompleteness of a pilot project which was to be finalized in July, the Committee summoned the Secretary Finance and the Secretary of Industry and Production to appear during the next session.

The Committee also called on the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and the private banking heads to appear before the panel at the next meeting to examine the coordination problems linked to poverty reduction programs.

Information of the Prime Minister’s Ramazan rescue package, officials revealed that 2.7 million out of 3.5 million deserving families had received assistance by digital portfolios.
