Three people were killed and five injured on Monday when a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the entrance to the federal police headquarters in Peshawar.
The attack took place in the Saddar area in the northwest of the city and involved three militants, according to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police. The dead and injured included both federal police and civilians, according to Mohammad Asim, a spokesperson for Lady Reading Hospital. Hospital officials said the injured were in stable condition.
Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed Ahmed led the security response. Authorities cordoned off the area and suspended public transportation along the main corridor near the blast site as a precaution. Police sealed off entry and exit points into the city and placed Peshawar on high alert. A mine clearance operation is underway, after which the roads are expected to reopen.
The Inspector General declared Express News that there had been no specific threat alert regarding the assault on the FC headquarters, but added that timely action enabled security personnel to quickly regain control of the situation. The IG noted that similar attacks in the southern districts of the province had recently been foiled and that a province-wide security review was conducted last week.
Rescue 1122 said it had deployed more than 50 rescue workers, as well as six ambulances and fire engines. No group has yet claimed responsibility.
