  • The city records the earthquakes of earthquakes for the 4th day.
  • Karachi has known 26 earthquakes since June 1.
  • “Sweet tremors can occur for another week”.

Karachi: Three other earthquake tremors with an intensity ranging from 2 to 3.1, were felt in the port city on Tuesday evening, according to the seismic surveillance center of the Pakistani meteorological department (PMD).

This marked the fourth consecutive day of seismic activity in the port city.

The last activity has taken the total number of tremors felt in Karachi since June 1 to 26, said the seismological center.

Given the worrying situation, chief meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari said that light tremors can occur for another week as the tectonic plaques movement continues.

Since Sunday, repeated light tremors have been felt in the districts of Karachi Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir and Sutricant, which raises concerns among the residents. No significant damage or injury has been reported.

Reason behind the tremors

The main meteorologists have attributed the current seismic activity to activate the Landhi flaw line, which, according to him, was currently going through a normalization phase.

According to Haider, light earthquakes can continue to another week, because energy is gradually released from the fault line. He explained that this slow energy release helps prevent the risk of a major earthquake.

“This particular flaw line was activated after several decades,” he noted, adding that the shallow depth of recent earthquakes is the reason why they felt more intensely through the city.

Haider pointed out that the buildings located directly above the fault line should be able to withstand tremors up to magnitude 6. He also stressed that the flaw lines passing through Karachi have been historically identified and documented.

Responding to concerns about cracks developing in houses, Haider said that these problems are linked to structural integrity and not necessarily linked to seismic activity.

He also mentioned the presence of another fault line near Thana Bula Khan, contributing to the overall seismic activity in Karachi and around.
