- Microsoft revealed a new feature for its Store in Windows 11
- It’s a hub full of selected or trending themes to apply to the office
- There are over 400 themes in total, including 35 new efforts
Microsoft wants to allow you to quickly personalize your Windows 11 desktop and, to this end, has introduced a curated themes section in the Microsoft Store.
Windows Central reports that Microsoft announced the move in a blog post, noting that the store’s new “Themes” hub is rolling out.
Microsoft enthuses: “Many of you tell us that you want your PC to feel like your own. Maybe you’re a gamer who wants to celebrate the latest release, a fan who finds pleasure in seeing their beloved characters every morning, a designer looking for an artfully composed background that sparks their creativity every time you log in, or someone who simply wants their desktop to look fresh and inspiring.
The concept is a showcase of curated themes – wallpapers and accent colors – based on your particular preferences, as well as trending themes. Find one you like and it can be applied to your Windows 11 desktop with just one click.
Microsoft tells us there are over 400 themes in total, and 35 of them are new. Some of the choices include a Sea of Thieves theme, a collection of warships, and a theme exploring the world’s national parks.
Analysis: a sea of themes
This is a nice addition to the Microsoft Store to make it more useful and to help you choose a theme based on your interests or what’s popular at the time (or possibly both of the above). Previously, trying to find themes in the store was a somewhat frustrating and unnecessarily tricky task because they were everywhere.
Obviously, Microsoft is hoping that this move will drive more traffic to the store, something it has been trying to do with various improvements for some time now. This includes modernizing the interface and improving overall performance on several fronts, as well as trying to get more developers to put their apps on the store.
If you want to browse Microsoft’s collection of themes, keep in mind that you may not see the hub yet – its rollout has only just begun. That said, I suspect it shouldn’t be long before it happens for most people, and the themes (or most of them) are still in the store even if you don’t have the hub – as noted, it’s about organizing the themes better, not presenting them to the store.
We can expect further strengthening of Windows 11’s customization options, as Microsoft says: “The new Themes department is just the first step in making every device a true reflection of its owner.”
Now, what’s the bet that AI will intervene somewhere?
