- California Cryobank confirmed a data violation in 2024
- Social security numbers, driving license numbers and more have been stolen
- The company offers credit supervision services to certain customers
One of the largest sperm banks in the United States has undergone a cyber attack in which it has lost sensitive customer data.
California Cryobank confirmed the news in a file to the Maine of the Prosecutor General’s office, as well as in a letter of notification of data violation sent to affected persons.
In the notification letter, the company said it had detected a suspicious activity on its network on April 21, 2024 and isolated from the potentially affected devices of the network.
What about donor identifiers?
“Thanks to our survey, CCB determined that an unauthorized part had access to our IT environment and may have access and / or acquired files maintained on certain computer systems between April 20, 2024 and April 22, 2024,” said the letter.
California cryobank is a sperm and egg bank that provides breeding services, including sperm donation, egg freezing and genetic screening. It is one of the largest banks of sperm in the United States, offering a diverse range of donors and services, and operating in the 50 states and more than two dozen countries in the world.
A more in -depth survey, which lasted almost a year, CCB concluded that different personal data were exposed for customers, such as names, bank accounts and routing numbers, social security numbers, driving license numbers, payment card numbers and / or health insurance information. He did not say how many people were affected.
It is not clear if information on donors, such as donor identification numbers, has also been stolen in the attack. When a person donates sperm, she is assigned an identification number and his identity remains hidden until the child is 18 years old and decides to know more about his biological father. The leak of identification numbers could be a major confidentiality problem.
The company offered a year of credit supervision to people whose social security numbers and driving license numbers have been exposed in the attack.
