Top Short puts Imran’s surety on the file

Islamabad:

The Supreme Court scheduled for August 12 at the hearing of Pakistan Tehreek-E-insaf (PTI), the founding president, the bailing petitions of President Imran Khan in the affairs related to the riots of May 9.

A bench of three members, led by the chief judge of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, will take charge of the case.

The Supreme Court had previously postponed the hearing for requests for freeing under bail of the ex-preminant imprisoned in the eight cases from May 9 until August 12, without issuing opinions requested by his lawyer.

In November 2024, an anti -terrorist courtyard of Lahore refused to grant Imran’s surety in affairs related to the riots of May 9, 2023, which included an attack on the residence of the Lahore Corps commander.

His later challenge to this decision was rejected by the High Court of Lahore (LHC) on June 24.

The former Prime Minister approached the Supreme Court to contest the rejection by the LHC of his pleads of release under bail. The appeal, filed by the main lawyer Salman Safdar, argued that Imran had been accused of “conspiracy and encouraging violence on May 9”.

He argued that at the time of alleged incidents, Imran was in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau, making his involvement in “impossible” disorders.

The petition also allegedly alleged that the founder of the PTI had faced an “unprecedented political victimization campaign” since his withdrawal of his duties two years earlier.

Contesting the LHC verdict, the petition said that the court had relied on “evidence designed and manufactured”, in particular “discredited and delayed declarations of the police”.
