- He was deceived to send a payment to the wrong account
- He informed the application of the law and tried to recover the funds
Niocorp Developments, a Canadian mineral exploration company operating in Nebraska, said a cyber attack in which he lost half a million dollars.
The company has confirmed the news via an 8-K report recently filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the United States.
In the report, tabled on February 14, Niocorp said that he had read “unauthorized third -party access” to its information systems, including “parts of its messaging systems”. The result of this access was a “poorly directed supplier’s payment” totaling approximately $ 0.5 million.
Investigate
In other words, someone has managed to encourage Niocorp to make a bad bank account.
This is generally done in email compromise attacks (BEC), when cybercriminals have access to a messaging account belonging to a senior executive and use it to encourage the finance service to make the wrong payment.
Niocorp says he quickly realized what had happened and informed the federal police and certain financial institutions to try to recover the money. It is not clear if he has yet succeeded or not. The company also said that it had “started taking measures” to investigate, contain, assess and resolve the attack.
Although the company believes that, apart from the beak, there has been no other attack or attempt, it always analyzes the nature and impact of the attack.
“On the date of this file, the company has not yet determined whether the cybersecurity incident is reasonably likely to have a significant impact on the company’s overall financial situation or its operating results,” concluded the case.
Niocorp developments aim to produce niobium, scandium and titanium applications for industrial and green technological applications.
