Lahore: Strong precipitation that started at 5 am attached Lahore for more than six hours, overwhelming the low zones, paralyzing traffic and causing structural damage in several Punjab districts.
The rain stopped around 11:30 am, but the drainage work of the wasa teams is still in progress.
The city of Nishtar received the heaviest showers, recording 182 mm, while rainwater entered the houses in Dharampura, Shah Jamal, Choburji and the surrounding localities. Vehicles and motorcycles were blocked in deep water, especially in the lower passages and along the main roads.
A house and a mosque in Shah Jamal were also flooded. Incidents of collapse of wall and roof have been reported to Lahore, Okara, Sheikhupura and Pattoki, killing five, including a woman and two children, and hurt several others.
In Sheikhupura, two children – Fatima, 5 years old and Arham, 2 years old – were killed when the roof of their house collapsed. In Pattoki, a 55 -year -old woman named Salma Bibi and a 12 -year -old boy named Sujawal lost her life in separate incidents.
In Lahore, a boy was electrocuted while he was bathed in the rainwater collected in a vacant plot near Lari Adda.
Katchi Abadis and Underpasses de Lahore were strongly affected, including the areas around Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, Haji Camp, Canal Road and Harbanspura. Despite the drainage efforts in progress, many districts remained full of water.
Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) reported breakdowns on 142 feeders, disturbing the power supply in many regions. The CEO Lesco urged citizens to avoid poles and power infrastructure during wet conditions and that restoration work would start once the rain stopped.
The director general of the WASA, Ghaffar Ahmed, visited affected areas and ordered the staff to quickly clean up major roads. The chief minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, appreciated the staff of the wasa working in the storm and ordered uninterrupted operations until all the roads were authorized.
The meteorological department predicted that the monsoon rains will continue intermittently until July 13, with more showers expected in Lahore, Jhelum, Siackot, Narowal and Hafizabad in the next 24 hours.
