Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have found a way back into the royal fold as Queen Elizabeth II’s heartbreaking request surfaces.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from senior royal duties in 2020 and expressed grievances about how they had been treated compared to other members of the family. Although the Queen insisted that “memories may vary,” she always kept the door open to the Sussexes, particularly her great-grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
New details about the matriarch’s final days have been revealed in royal author Robert Hardman’s upcoming book, which pulls back the curtain on Elizabeth’s heartfelt request and its clear message for her grandchildren.
Before she breathed her last at Balmoral in September 2022, Elizabeth was already feeling “too tired” for many commitments given her ongoing treatments. Therefore, she had saved it for one last meeting with her beloved despite the latent divisions.
One of the officials revealed that Elizabeth had been “so brave” in her final days and that before leaving for Edinburgh she held a final round of hearings and a meeting of the Privy Council.
“We had a private conversation at the end,” said one meeting attendee. “I felt a little emotional when I left because, well, it just felt like goodbye to me.”
They continued: “She had very clear messages about how she thought things would go in the future. Very clear, indeed!”
The source revealed that all of the Queen’s great-grandchildren – including the Sussex children as well as William and Kate’s three children – had been invited to Balmoral at some point during the summer.
“She wanted to make sure they all remembered her fondly,” a family friend said. However, the late queen somehow knew that Harry and Meghan wouldn’t be able to come.
This could potentially mean there was a way back for the Sussexes if they had taken a chance back then. King Charles could follow his mother’s final wishes alongside his own desire to meet his grandchildren amid reports that escalations between Buckingham Palace and Montecito are underway.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve for the king’s grandchildren.
