Transport Alliance head says agreements reached with government are not being implemented
KARACHI:
Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance Chairman Malik Shehzad Awan has sharply criticized the recent increase in oil prices and warned that transporters may announce a nationwide strike after Eid, following consultations with stakeholders across Pakistan.
In a statement, Awan said transporters across the country have condemned the rise in fuel prices, noting that diesel prices had increased by Rs 23-24 per liter and petrol by Rs 13 per liter in the last two months. Despite the rise in fuel prices during the holy month of Ramazan, he said, transporters have not increased their fares.
He added that the rise in fuel prices does not only affect transporters but also all citizens, as it triggers a wave of inflation. According to him, both the federal and Punjab governments were putting the transporters in a difficult position. He recalled that carriers had already observed a 10-day nationwide strike due to what he described as flawed policies.
Awan further alleged that agreements reached with the government were not being implemented.
