Coaching in the NFL isn’t easy, and Troy Aikman knows it.
During a recent radio appearance in Dallas, where he played his Hall of Fame career, Aikman wondered why it continues to be a hot commodity.
“Sean McVay, he flirted with this a few years ago after they won their Super Bowl, and he had a lot of thought about it on television. We see it from coaches, we saw it from officials who left the field to go into television. It’s a very tough job right now. I’ve said it a lot, I don’t know why anyone would want to be a coach. People always are,” Aikman told The Ticket.

Ironically, Aikman would help the Miami Dolphins find their next head coach, just like he did with their general manager. But to prove Aikman’s point, speculation is that Mike Tomlin, who resigned after 19 seasons as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is looking to get into television.
When it came to the general manager search, Dolphins owners reportedly wanted “an outside, respected perspective from someone who had strong relationships within the league.”
Miami fired Chris Grier as general manager in October. He had been with the organization since 2000 and served as the team’s general manager since 2016. Last month, head coach Mike McDaniel opted to bench Tua Tagovailoa for Quinn Ewers, saying the seventh-round rookie gave them a better chance to win.

Last week, owner Stephen Ross cut ties with McDaniel, citing the need to “global change” after the team missed the playoffs for a second straight year with a 7-10 record this season.
The Dolphins made the playoffs twice in a row during McDaniel’s first two seasons as head coach, but were eliminated in the first round each time. The following season, they were eliminated after suffering an unexpected loss to the New York Jets in the team’s season finale.
McDaniel’s final season in Miami was tumultuous, highlighted by by Tagovailoa his difficulties and his possible benching during the last three games of the season.

As one of his last major changes as head coach, McDaniel said the Dolphins would hold a quarterback competition for the 2026 season. Tagovailoa then said it would be “dope” to get a “fresh start.”
