- Trump administration creates ‘AI litigation task force’ to roll back AI regulations
- The task force will seek to review and overturn laws implemented by the state.
- Trump says winning the AI race is vital for national security
Experts have warned that AI is evolving far faster than any regulation can control, and that the fragile security laws we have in place are not enough to protect users and society as a whole.
But even these flimsy protections could be rolled back in the United States, as the Trump administration’s new plans include a new executive order giving the federal government unlimited power over states, creating an “AI Litigation Task Force” that would seek to challenge state AI laws.
The draft document states that the task force would seek to remove all barriers and regulatory frameworks for U.S. leadership in AI, emphasizing the importance of the United States leading the global technological revolution; “Our national security demands that we win this race.”
“Heavy regulations”
One particular target of the task force will be California’s new AI safety laws, which the draft order calls “complex and burdensome,” saying the bill is based on “purely speculative suspicions that AI could ‘pose a significant catastrophic risk.’
The legislation also advises states that there will likely be funding restrictions for those that have implemented AI laws that the administration deems onerous, or that require AI models to “alter their truthful results, or that may require AI developers or deployers to disclose or report information in a manner that would violate the First Amendment.”
It is important to note the timing of this command. The AI bubble is widely expected to be likely to burst at any moment, meaning that many tech (and other) companies that have gone all-in on AI are now, it seems, in danger of imminent collapse – and in fact, the entire global economy seems to just be hovering around the edge waiting for the first domino to fall.
So, by eliminating guardrails and regulations, the Trump administration is most likely seeking to soften this blow by putting users and consumers at risk through deregulated and unrestricted AI, with less transparency or accountability to protect the public.
