Washington: A Reuters / Ipsos survey revealed that one in three American approves how President Donald Trump tackles the cost of living in the United States, highlighting increasing concerns while his steep import rates are starting to take effect.

The two -day survey, carried out just before the Republican President addresses a joint session of the Congress, showed that Trump approval ratings less than 40% on a series of questions – including the economy, foreign policy and corruption – with the notable exception being his 49% note on immigration policy.

Admittedly, the part of the Americans who give him a boost overall – stable at 44% – remains higher than the ratings obtained by his predecessor, the Democrat Joe Biden, during the second half of his administration 2021-2025.

The survey has shown that 31% of Americans approve of Trump management of the cost of living, a marginal drop of three percentage points of 34% in a survey carried out on February 21-23. Fifty-four percent disapprove.

Trump quickly evolved into the revision of America’s relations with the rest of the world, with high prices of 25% Tuesday for Mexican and Canadian imports, as well as prices of 20% on Chinese products.

Economists say the prices will feed inflation. Trump’s victory in the presidential election in 2024 was in part a general dissatisfaction to several years of strong inflation under Biden. Only 31% of those questioned agreed with a statement that prices would be a good idea even if prices increased.

Government reports last week highlighted persistent inflation in a strong election in January. When it has been adjusted at higher prices, consumer spending has displayed its greatest decrease since February 2021.

Moscow pivot

Trump also pivoted a closer relationship with Moscow and closed military aid to Ukraine, who defends himself from a large -scale Russian invasion.

The survey has shown that the Americans were divided in Trump’s plan to condition Washington’s support in Ukraine in the United States, obtaining a share of Ukraine’s mineral wealth. Trump hopes to announce an agreement on minerals during his speech to Congress, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Some 46% of survey respondents supported the United States packaging condition on mineral wealth, against 50% who opposed the idea.

While Trump seemed to blame Ukraine for having triggered war, the Americans generally consider Russia as the aggressor of the conflict, according to the Reuters / Ipsos survey. Some 70% of respondents – including three quarters of the Democrats and two -thirds of the Republicans – agreed with a statement that Russia was more to blame than Ukraine for having triggered war.

Trump also shook the federal government by appointing Elon Musk, the richest person in the world, to revise their workforce, in particular by eliminating many public service jobs during the first weeks of Trump.

While the Reuters / Ipsos survey has shown that the federal government reduction was largely popular – 59% of respondents said they supported the idea – support for mass layoffs of public service employees was decidedly lower. Only 40% of survey respondents said they had supported tens of thousands of federal workers. Some 57% opposed, including approximately a quarter of the self-identified Republicans.

Fifty percent of those questioned – including one in five Republicans and four out of five Democrats – said Trump had gone too far with Musc’s program to reduce public spending.

The Reuters / Ipsos survey, carried out online and at the national level, interviewed 1,174 American adults and had a margin of error of three percentage points.
