Washington: US President Donald Trump rejected the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s appeal to greater American military support to Ukraine, insisting rather that a mineral agreement with kyiv is the key to ensuring his security against Russia.
Starmer, who met Trump in the White House for the first time since the American chief began his second term, lit the charm, saying that peace in Ukraine had only become possible because of Trump.
In the oval office, Starmer gave King Charles invitation letter for a state visit. Trump accepted. A date has not been set.
But the underlying differences between the allies remained on the table for the private conversation that followed. They include transatlantic frictions on American-Russia talks to end the Ukraine War.
Before the meeting, Starmer had argued that there could not be long -term peace in Ukraine without warranty of American security – an almost rejected Trump argument.
“We are a fixed because we will be there, we will work,” following the economic partnership, said Trump. “We are going to have a lot of people there.”
Starmer is the last European leader to meet Trump after French President Emmanuel Macron came to the White House on Monday for a friendly meeting which nevertheless showed differences struck on the Russian war with Ukraine and the United States for a rapid ceasefire.
“It evolves fairly quickly,” said Trump about the cease-fire diplomacy, expressing the optimism that Russian president Vladimir Putin would keep his end of any case. “It will be either quite soon or it will not be at all.”
“We have to do things well,” said Starmer at a joint press conference with Trump. “It cannot be peace that rewards the attacker.”
Shocking allies
Trump, who came into office on January 20, shocked the traditional allies of the United States in Europe by approaching Putin, calling the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy a “dictator” and demanding reimbursement for American financial support for kyiv. Trump moved away from the dictator’s comment on Thursday and said he was getting along with the Ukrainian chief.
On Friday, Zelenskiy is expected to be in Washington to sign an agreement with Trump on Rare Land minerals, an agreement that the Ukrainian leader said he was dependent on American aid. Trump depicts the agreement as a way to recover American money spent to support Ukraine. It does not include any specific security guarantee for Ukraine.
Starmer said that Great Britain would increase defense spending and should try to reassure the American president that Europe will provide guarantees of support and security in kyiv if peace discussions with Russia succeed.
A senior Trump administration official told journalists that they were satisfied with Starmer’s promises to increase defense expenses.
Putin warned the “Western elites” on Thursday against trying to sabotage a potential rapprochement between Russia and the United States, saying that Moscow would use its diplomats and intelligence to thwart these efforts. Remarks were an apparent reference to the European Union and Great Britain.
Trump has broken foreign policy and internal policy standards since the start of his second term, allies making allies by pleading for the American property of the Gaza Strip and promising commercial prices on American friends and enemies.
Trump said the United States would conclude a trade agreement with Great Britain “very soon”, a few hours after one of its assistants told journalists that they were looking for an “economic relationship with the United Kingdom to be based on reciprocal and equal trade”.
In the Oval Office, Trump complained about commercial relations with the European Union, which Great Britain left in 2020.
“On our profession, obviously, it is fair and balanced,” prohibited Starmer, “and in fact you have a little surplus, so we are in a different position.” The United States has a trade surplus in goods with Great Britain, according to statistics from the US government.
Meanwhile, US vice-president JD Vance, who also attended the meeting, said that leaders would discuss what he described as “freedom of expression” in Great Britain who affected American technological companies.
“We had freedom of expression for a very long time in the United Kingdom,” said Starmer.
Friendly relations
Trump’s relationship with Starmer experienced a friendly start in September with a two -hour dinner in New York in Trump Tower. The British leader team said the atmosphere was warm with a “graceful host”.
As Macron, Starmer will say that a peace agreement precipitated with Russia, without the participation of Ukraine or European countries, could lead to new instability in Europe, which would not be good for the United States.
Starmer said that it was open to British troops providing security guarantees to Ukraine, but only alongside other European nations and “good conditions in place”.
European countries are concerned about the high level of conflict in Ukraine now, said the American official, while a cease-fire would give them more comfort than their role concerns the maintenance of peace than to dissuade active conflicts.
“The type of strength depends a lot on the political rules that are made to end the war,” said the American official. “This compromise is part of what leaders today will discuss.”
