Washington: American president Donald Trump warned Monday that Washington will impose prices on Russia within 10 days unless Moscow takes measures to end his three -year war in Ukraine.
Addressing journalists in the Air Force One, Trump said that he had not heard of Russian officials and reported that the time was exhausted.
He also postponed concerns about oil prices, saying that the United States could increase its own production to compensate for any impact.
“I do not know if it will affect Russia because (Russian president Vladimir Putin) wants, obviously, to continue the war,” said Trump. “But we are going to put prices and the different things you put.”
The American president, who has among the past spoken to have a good relationship with Putin, has become more and more frustrated by Moscow’s refusal to accept a cease-fire. The new deadline suggests that Trump is now ready to act on his threat of sanctions, after having hesitated before.
Speaking on Monday in Scotland, he threatened sanctions on both Russia and the countries continuing to buy his exports – also called secondary sanctions – unless progress is made.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told journalists that he had raised the issue of secondary sanctions with Chinese officials for two days of bilateral talks this week.
He said he had warned Chinese officials that Beijing could face steep prices if he continued to buy Russian oil.
In an article on X, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, said that Trump was playing “a game of ultimatums” which could lead to a war involving the United States.
Trump, who also faces pressures to conclude a peace agreement in Gaza, promoted his role in resolving conflicts between India and Pakistan, as well as Rwanda and Congo. Before returning to the White House in January, Trump had campaigned on a commitment to end the Russian-Ukraine war in a single day.
