The convoy of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar was attacked near Muzaffarabad, leaving two people injured. However, the speaker remained unharmed.
According to Express NewsHe was on his way to a political meeting in the suburb of Muzaffarabad, near Khawara, when the shooting took place. He confirmed the attack in a phone call, saying his convoy had come under fire while on his way to a political rally.
Akbar informed Express News that just three days before the attack, his opponents had made threats on social networks, which he had reported to the administration and the police. However, no preventive measures were taken. The two injured people were taken to hospital.
Following the incident, tensions escalated, leading to exchanges of gunfire between police and members of the Muslim Conference party as they attempted to control the situation.
Deputy Commissioner Rural Hamad Bashir said the administration was taking steps to control the situation and that a few individuals attacked the president’s convoy with gunfire and stones.
According to AC Rural, a Pakistan People’s Party worker was injured by a bullet and a stone. Authorities were actively working to apprehend those responsible for the shooting, and the attackers later began shooting at police, but no casualties were reported.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attack on the president’s convoy, calling it a cowardly act. The Prime Minister asked relevant authorities to ensure the speedy capture of the attackers and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
