On Wednesday, two security employees assigned to the protection of a polio vaccination team were killed during a targeted attack in the Balutchistan mastung district.
The ambush took place in the Mastung district, where members of the surveys force kept a health team administering polio vaccines as part of a national campaign, Express News reported.
According to levies, unidentified armed men opened fire on the police without warning. The deceased was transported to a local hospital and a research operation was launched in the region.
No group immediately claimed the responsibility of the shooting.
The attacks on polio teams and their security details have occurred intermittently in Pakistan, one of the few countries where the virus remains endemic.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the assault, expressing sorrow on deaths and exercising prayers for victims and their families.
“Those who harm innocent people and disrupt public health efforts are enemies of humanity,” said Sharif in a statement, promising to translate the perpetrators into justice.
He reaffirmed the determination of the government to eradicate Pakistan polio, declaring: “Such incidents will not weaken our determination.”
The Prime Minister called on parents to ensure that their children receive polio falls to secure their future and said the national campaign would proceed to the full force.
Polio workers and their safety escorts have often been attacked, especially in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balutchistan.
In 2024, at least 20 people were killed and 53 injured in similar incidents during polio vaccination training in KP.
