During a cheeky night assault, activists attacked a police checkpoint in Karak during the first hours of Thursday, killing at least two police officers and injuring six others, the authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The attackers, armed with heavy weapons, launched a heavy dam of gunshots at the police station in the Bahadurkhel region.

The deceased officers were identified as the Naqeeb and Adnan driver. Four injured people were transported urgently to the Karak district headquarters to be treated. Two of the wounded are in critical condition and were transferred to Peshawar for advanced medical care.

District police officer (DPO) Karak PK Press Club News that the attackers fled the premises after the police retaliated.

A heavy police quota immediately arrived on the accident site, closing the area and launching a research operation to apprehend the authors.

The security measures were increased in the area after the incident.

The attack comes only a few days after a police officer was shot dead by Khyber district extremists during an anti-political campaign.

On February 3, an inoculation team was ambushed in the Bakarabad region on the first day of the vaccination campaign, highlighting the persistent threat posed by militant groups in the region.

It should be mentioned here that the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehreek-E-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), remain the most active militant group in the region.

In response to the escalation of security threats, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared last month the need to eliminate the “Fitna al-Khawarij”, referring to the TTP, which was responsible for numerous attacks against the forces of security and civilians.

At a meeting of the Central Committee of the Apex on the National Action Plan (NAP) on January 3, Prime Minister Shehbaz urged the federal and provincial authorities to develop a complete strategy to fight against terrorism and ensure the peace across the country.

He specifically highlighted the presence of infiltrators at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and congratulated the security forces for the solid response to recent cross -border terrorist attacks.

Pakistan had an increase in militant violence since the Taliban found power in neighboring Afghanistan in 2021. According to the Center for Research and Security Studies, based in Islamabad, more than 1,600 people were killed in attacks in 2023 , marking the deadliest of the year of almost a year of almost a decade.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban government of Afghanistan of not limiting militant activities on its soil, an accusation that Kabul Nie.

The situation between the two neighbors remains tense, with recent incidents, including a bombing in November in Balutchistan which killed seven people – five children – arousing the current security challenges.

The authorities continue to investigate Karak’s last attack while efforts to stabilize the region and at the same time are intensifying.
