Stressing the human and economic cost of terrorism, the Prime Minister noted that Pakistan had undergone more than 90,000 victims and had suffered economic losses over $ 150 billion. “As one of the greatest victims of terrorism, Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against this scourge were unparalleled,” he added.

Shehbaz Sharif has expressed hope that these appointments would strengthen Pakistan’s commitment with the framework for combating multilateral terrorism of the United Nations and reaffirming its determination to contribute to world peace and security.

In addition, the permanent mission of Pakistan to the United Nations praised the appointments, declaring that development represented recognition of the active and constructive role of the country in the United Nations system, in particular its commitment as elected member of the Security Council.

“These appointments are an international recognition of the efforts to combat Pakistan terrorism,” the mission said in a statement.

He added that Pakistan has remained determined to work closely with the United Nations and other Member States to maintain the United Nations Charter and contribute to global efforts to combat terrorism through international collaboration.

According to the update list of the chairs of subsidiary organizations of the CSNU, Denmark will assume the president of the 1267 ISIL (Da’esh) and the Al-Qaida sanctions committee in 2025, with Russia and Sierra Leone named Vice-President. Algeria will direct the 1373 terrorism fighting committee, while France, Pakistan and Russia will serve as vice-president.

In addition to chairing the 1988 sanctions committee in 2025, Pakistan will work alongside Guyana and Russia, which were appointed vice-presidents of the same committee. The 1988 committee oversees the implementation of sanctions – including asset gels, travel prohibitions and arms embarrassments – on individuals and entities linked to the Taliban who constitute a threat to peace and stability in Afghanistan.

The recent elections of Pakistan as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2025-2010 mandate also cement its diplomatic position at the UN. The country obtained 182 votes out of 193 during the election of the general assembly of last year, considerably exceeding the majority of two thirds required.

The United Nations Security Council is made up of 15 members, including five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – with a right of veto and ten non -permanent members elected for two years. Non -permanent current members are Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia.
