Congressional Republicans are already on the ropes in this year’s US midterm elections, and Congress is likely to change in ways that will profoundly affect crypto efforts. So the advocacy group Stand With Crypto is gearing up with a slate of endorsed candidates and a new political poll that indicates neither party has a majority advantage as the best crypto advocate.
Stand With Crypto, initially created by Coinbase as a pro-crypto group populated by retail investors, is known for its political advocacy, including maintaining a rating system for U.S. politicians. He announced his support for six “battleground” races on Thursday, backing congressional incumbents — such as Republican Zach Nunn in Iowa and Democrat Don Davis in North Carolina — who have supported the industry.
The organization will make efforts to encourage its members to vote and will also fund media campaigns. In two other districts, he said he would oppose politicians with a track record against crypto interests. And other races will be named as the year progresses, the group said.
During these back-to-back elections, Stand With Crypto commissioned a survey that highlighted the sentiment of crypto-owning voters in battleground states. The results, released Thursday, show that neither the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party achieved a majority that thinks they are better for the industry, although Republicans are favored 45% to 26%, according to the Impact Research study conducted last month.
The snapshot of likely voters, which had a margin of error of 4.4%, indicates that crypto enthusiasts were highly motivated to vote this year, and 64% of those who hold cryptocurrencies said they were enthusiastic about supporting pro-crypto candidates.
These midterm elections could have significant consequences for the industry. Even if Congress finalizes the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act before the November general election, a number of other crypto-related legislative needs remain, including adapting the U.S. tax system to crypto and the creation of a U.S. strategic bitcoin reserve ordered by President Donald Trump. But it’s very likely that Democrats will run at least one of the chambers of Congress by then, and crypto may not be as high a priority as Republicans.
Bets from prediction market firm Kalshi have the Democrats’ odds on the House majority at more than 84 percent. The chances of a tougher Democratic path in the Senate are considered closer to a toss-up.
Other House lawmakers endorsed by Stand With Crypto include:
- Rep. Susie Lee, a Nevada Democrat;
- Rep. Mike Lawler, Republican of New York;
- Rep. Greg Landsman, a Democrat from Ohio;
- Representative Rob Bresnahan, a Republican from Pennsylvania.
