Last night, around 10 pm on Thursday, people in Karachi faced problems with their internet and online services. Internet service providers such as PTCL and Stormfiber, as well as services and applications such as WhatsApp, YouTube, Amazon Web Services and Instagram, experienced outages, Downdetector reports.
According to the outage monitor, PTCL and Stormfiber services experienced issues in the same time frame, between 9 p.m. and midnight. PTCL recorded 112 reported outages at its peak around 10:30 p.m., while Stormfiber recorded 59 reported outages. Most people complained about internet outages, although some experienced a complete outage of services.

On Friday, the PTCL spokesperson denied there were any outages. “There was no problem from PTCL’s side.”

Meanwhile, Stormfiber Automated Call Answering said: “We are experiencing a sudden degradation of one of our upstream networks. [service providers],” and we “coordinate with the upstream supplier” to resolve these issues.

Broken social platforms
People also complained about the decline of Instagram and Facebook, with the number of reports for both reaching a maximum of 134 and 65 respectively. There were also reports of YouTube and X outages, but there were only a total of 16 reports for the former and four reports for the latter.

WhatsApp saw a spike of 120 reported outages, with 55% of users reporting issues sending messages, 32% with server connectivity, and 13% with the app itself.
On average, user complaints were about websites, their respective applications, and server connectivity, but the majority of complaints were about not being able to connect to the Internet.
When surveying some Stormfiber users, most of them said they had “a really poor internet connection” last night; However, one user did not notice much change in their connection quality. For the most part, these issues only persisted until midnight, with people seeing a return to normal services as early as this morning.
