Vietnam has blocked the telegram for omitting to cooperate with the authorities in the crimes stopping on the platform.
As PK Press Club reported, the head of the country’s telecommunications department made the blocking order against telecommunications companies on May 21, 2025, with the obligation to present itself to the ministry by June 2.
Although the block has not entered into force immediately, Telegram seems to be inaccessible from the country at the time of the editorial staff. However, according to what a government official said to PK Press Club, Telegram has not shared user data with the authorities when asked as the law requires.
Vietnam has indeed applied a controversial law in December of last year which obliges social media suppliers to store the data of Vietnamese users and to share it with the authorities on request. The CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested in August 2024 in France because, among other things, not having moderate the application correctly to combat crimes on the platform. After that, Telegram seems to have strengthened its moderation policies.
