Viggo Mortensen leaves role of Aragorn in new ‘Lord of the Rings’ film

Viggo Mortensen will not return to Middle-earth as Aragorn.

The actor who played the future King of Gondor in the original Peter Jackson film Lord of the Rings the trilogy will not reprise the role in The Hunt for Gollum.

Director Andy Serkis revealed the news, ending weeks of speculation and sparking intrigue over who will inherit one of fantasy’s most iconic mantles when the film releases on December 17, 2027.

“…we’re recasting the role and we’re close to finding someone,” Serkis told ScreenRant, leaving fans to prepare for the emergence of a new Aragorn.

Serkis will direct and reprise his role as Gollum, promising a story that is equal parts chase and psychological descent.

“It’s a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself,” he explained, teasing a journey that will test Gollum’s fractured soul and the audience’s expectations.

Peter Jackson returns as producer, alongside Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou joining from The Rohirrim War.

Kate Winslet has also been confirmed in the casting, although her role remains secret.

Set between The Hobbit And The Fellowship of the Ring, The Hunt for Gollum aims to blend seamlessly into existing tradition.

Serkis pointed out that for some viewers, this will be their first adventure in Middle-earth, raising the stakes for authenticity and spectacle.

Beyond Middle-earth, Serkis also brings George Orwell’s classic allegory to life.

His adaptation of Animal Farm is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
