Virgin Media was broken – here is everything we know about today’s breakdown

The breakdown is now (hope) finished

A spokesperson for Virgin Media has just said: “We now have services fully restored for all customers, following a previous breakdown. We would like to apologize again to customers who have been affected for any disadvantage cause.”

So that’s all – or is it? Downdector always displays a few hundred reports of problems, at the time of writing. Now that Virgin Media has solved the problems, however, these residual problems should, let’s hope to have fun soon. And with that, we offer you farewell for this live blog-as long as these problems remain resolved, that is to say.

Virgin Media is back for the “major majority”

The good news is that, according to Virgin Media’s social media team, it has now “restored the services for the vast majority of customers who have been affected by a previous breakdown”.

The bad news? If you came to this page, we assume that it does not include you – and Virgin Media is still trying to solve certain residual problems. He indicates that “our teams work tirelessly to fully restore services for all remaining customers, and we apologize again for any downside caused”.

Virgin Media has still not commented on the deep cause on issues, which have struck businesses as well as individuals – the student loans reimbursement company (above), for example, at 2 p.m., it could only offer General advice rather than full service.

Complaints rumble …

Although Virgin Media’s Internet problems seem to have submitted to most, they certainly did not leave according to DowndeTector – with complaints to a regular 500 for the last two hours, which is well above the base of typical reference.

It is much less than the peak of around 10,000 that we saw earlier, but it suggests that the problems prove stubborn in certain regions – the hot spots continuing to be London, Manchester, Birmingham and Belfast. Virgin Media has not yet commented on the deep cause of the problems, but we will update you as soon as we hear more.

Virgin is in the middle of the table for high speed complaints

Although Virgin Media customers may not be in love with their service today – which seems to be on connection, according to Downdector – it could be a little comfort to know that this is in no way the worst for complaints.

According to OFCOM data published two weeks ago, it is in the middle of large -band tables “complaints per 100,000” (Indicate the High of pops Countdown Music). At the top is TalkTalk, followed by EE and now.

Virgin Media, who was once in Talktalk’s shoes, is now in fourth place, in front of Vodafone, BT, Plusnet and Sky, who had the least complaints in the period from July to September 2024.

Of course, all this could change in 2025 – and Virgin Media customers will hope that today’s problems will be rare, otherwise it could evolve in the wrong direction in the large -band shame of ofcom.

Signs of recovery?

The good news for Virgin Media customers is that Downdector reports have now dropped to the 1,500 mark at the time of the editorial staff (a 10,000 hp peak around 11:10 a.m.).

This does not necessarily mean that all the problems have been solved, just that there are no waves of new customers adding to the complaints. But it is generally a good sign – and some anecdote in the Techradar team have found that their internet connection is back to full shape.

We asked Virgin Media to tell us in a press release when it is officially solved the problems and that we will bring you (hope) soon.

Could you get compensation?

If you work at home and you are struggling with Virgin Media’s internet problems, your thoughts could turn to compensation.

On his credit, Virgin Media is quite clear on this subject on his compensation page (even if some can claim that it is because it is so often down). As part of its “automatic remuneration diet”, you are apparently eligible for “£ 9.76 per day for total loss of service after 2 complete working days by recording the loss of service to us”.

Lowering, problems must be a “total loss of service” and you must record problems with Virgin Media either on the phone, or using his service verifier, that many in the Techradar team have found very dizzying today .

Thus, although remuneration is possible, there is a chance that today’s problems (heading currently around three o’clock) may not be eligible – and even if they do it, pretension could be more difficult That it is worth it.

It’s not just Virgin Media …

Although Virgin Media was by far the most affected this morning, Downdector also displays smaller but notable points on other services – including BT, Xbox, Microsoft 365 and more.

Sometimes these parallel spikes are simply due to the way people report problems (for example, recording it as a team rather than a problem by Virgin Media). But that also suggests that problems could be linked to the DNS (or domain name system), which means that you cannot connect to the server to access websites.

When the Internet community fiber fell to the United Kingdom last week, many reported that connected to their router and choosing a different DNS (like ‘8.8.8.8’ ‘) temporarily resolved their problems, as it did Using a VPN. Although there is no evidence that it will help you today’s virgin breakdown …

A Virgin Declaration

Virgin Media has just come back to us with the following statement: “We know that some customers are experiencing intermittent problems with their services. We apologize for any inconvenience and work to solve this problem as a priority”.

There is currently no time scale estimated for the fix, but it is good to recognize that Virgin works on it. In the meantime, he is back to the telephone attachment for many, or perhaps try one of the best VPNs in case the problems are linked to DNS problems …

And … Virgin’s Service Checker is broken down

As if Virgin Media’s customers need their blood pressure to increase today, the company’s service tracker – which should tell you about the known problems in your region – is currently down for many.

Looking at the Virgin Media report map on Downdetector, it is sure to say that this is a national problem, with reported problems from Plymouth to Dundee. We are currently disturbing Virgin for an explanation and will update you as soon as we hear.

Welcome to an unfortunate start of the week …

Hello and commisiations if you are a Virgin Media client who has internet problems this morning. You are not alone – nearly 10,000 customers have reported problems with Internet Landline this morning on Downdector (above).

This includes several people on Techradar. We contacted Virgin Media to comment on what causes the problems and we will report as soon as we hear – but I hope that the drop in the graph above suggests that there are already signs of recovery (for some). .
