- VW CEO confirms a GTI version of the next ID 2 electric model
- A whole family of GTI cars will arrive in the next decade
- An electrified golf course is also on the cards
The CEO of Volkswagen, Thomas Schäfer, said that the brand plans to propel its emblematic GTI badge in the electricity with the launch of the ID 2 GTI.
By going to Hot Hatch’s proposals, Auto because reports that VW also provides an entire electric version of the ninth generation golf course, with a Badged GTI iteration, with an “whole group of GTI” which will follow later.
The first EV to obtain the performance treatment will be a version of the ID 2 range, which was presented in the concept Car GTI 2023 ID.
This design study brought all the classic characteristics of the GTI, including an emblematic flywheel with a low driving height and an aggressive body work, as well as the famous GTI badge.
Schäfer told Auto because his experience as a first vehicle prototype suggests that the next GTI electric model will be “a monster car”.
There is no installation date for the first EV GTI-BADGED, but the ID 2 should be launched at the start of next year, which is to be the 50th anniversary of the launch of the original MK1 Golf GTI.
GTI must be hot but achievable
While addressing Auto because, the CEO Thomas Schäfer said that the main objective with the GTI electrical models is to make them feel clearly different from the standard car, which includes the manipulation, the sound and the guarantee that they are exciting to drive.
So far, Hyundai has proven that it can be done with the formidable Ioniq 5N, but the weight of the technology required to make alert to launch a race circuit also means that it is phenomenally expensive.
The GTI badge has always defended the performances feasible, with the type of price which means that those which even have an uninstiving of disposable income may think of having one.
Although there was no word on the technology underlying the next family of GTI models, Schäfer declared during the launch of the ID GTI concept that cars will remain “sporting, emblematic, technologically progressive and accessible”, while being adapted to daily driving.
Until now, Volkswagen’s electric vehicles have encountered a lukewarm reaction, the first identification models proving to be bland, soulless and easily forgettable.
The introduction of GTI will bring, hopefully, part of this VW excitement to its all-electric range, while the first looks on the next ID 2 2 prove that the German brand is back at the top … and back to physical buttons.
