In 2007, exchange student Meredith Kercher was sexually assaulted and murdered in Perugia, for which Kercher’s roommate Knox, as well as Knox’s boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and their acquaintance Rudy Guede were later convicted. Knox and Sollecito were acquitted and released in 2011, when it was determined that Guede had acted alone.

It was a keynote speech at an Innocence Project conference that brought her back to Italy in 2022, and she took the opportunity to confront Giuliano Mignini, the lead prosecutor who had sent her to prison.
