KARACHI:
Water supply in parts of Karachi’s western district and Keamari was restored on Wednesday after the installation of a new control valve on the Hub Canal reservoir channel.
“The project marks a step towards strengthening and modernizing the city’s water distribution system,” said a press release from the spokesperson of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC). The development works were carried out as directed by KWSC CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui.
The press release adds that crews worked around the clock to ensure the project was completed on time and with minimal disruption to residents. The on-time completion reflects the technical expertise and coordination of the field crews, engineers and support staff involved in the project.

The newly installed control gate is expected to improve the regulation and safety of water flows from the Hub Pumping Station. The press release said the upgrade would lead to notable improvements in water transportation in the Western District and Keamari, while helping to reduce water losses.
He added that the project would contribute to long-term water supply stability and strengthen Karachi’s broader water infrastructure. Similar development initiatives aimed at improving basic civic services will continue in the future, the press release added.
Siddiqui and KWSC Chief Operations Engineer Asadullah Khan also noted that the main objective of the project was to improve the efficiency and equity of water distribution in different parts of the city.
Karachi has been stuck in a water crisis for almost two decades, but the much-awaited K-IV mega water project remains unfinished due to delays, funding constraints and a lack of coordination between the federal and Sindh governments.

The project, which promises an additional 260 million gallons of water per day for Karachi, has four main components. Three are currently under construction, while work on the fourth has not yet started. Although 2027 has been set as the deadline for water to reach households in Karachi, internal assessments suggest that, without urgency from both governments, completion could drift until 2030.
Despite chronic water and sanitation issues that continued to plague the country’s financial hub throughout 2025, the KWSC claimed several achievements during 2025.
On December 31, a one-year performance report was released, listing achievements including the rehabilitation of the old Hub Canal after several decades, substantial progress in the New Hub Canal megaproject, and the installation of additional pumps at the main pumping stations.
