- The result? A resounding disappointment shared by users on gaming forums
- Common complaints include an abundance of ports and a lack of truly “new” reveals
If you were disappointed by the announcements from this week’s Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, it turns out you’re not alone.
The stream, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, showcased a number of upcoming games for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. We surveyed the thousands of readers who followed our live coverage of the event, receiving hundreds of responses.
The question was simple: “How would you rate the latest Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase out of 10?” » with options for each numerical score. The answer? A resounding 1/10.
Of the 275 votes received, the majority (28%) chose a score of 1/10. Likewise, low numbers dominate the other most common answers, with 3/10 and 2/10 taking second and third place.
If you add it all up, an overwhelming 58% rated the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase below 5/10.
Although it didn’t make the top three, 7/10 (which I would consider representing a “good” score) was still quite popular with 10% of the votes, suggesting that some viewers were happy.
It is telling, however, that very few voters chose to give Direct a 10/10 rating (only 4%), and even fewer (3%) chose 9/10.
To find out why, I turned to Reddit and gaming forum Resetera to see what users are saying. The common theme seems to be a lack of new reveals, with the majority of trailers focusing on already announced ports or products.
“Most of them aren’t even ads. [Indie game] Orbitals “It looks amazing and is one of my most anticipated games, but we saw it in the last Nintendo Direct,” read one of the top-rated comments on a thread about the Direct. “What’s really new here?”
“There was only one game that was a world first and exclusive to the Switch 2,” one user responded. “This game was The Tokyo Rush. Fun concept (dinosaur stealth game) but requires a lot of tweaking and refinement. It seemed like something independent.”
“There was really nothing except [Kyoto] Xanadu it was a bit interesting or hadn’t already been out in ages elsewhere,” said another.
One commenter on Resetera simply wrote, “I’m going back to bed,” which pretty much sums up the overall sentiment.
Despite all that, there were definitely some interesting highlights. Orbitals is indeed superb with its It takes two style of cooperative action and adorable art style, all in a new take on Resident Evil Requiem and the revelation of a The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered go port to show the technical capabilities of Switch 2 hardware.
Still, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the next Nintendo Direct will be a little more exciting.
