The question of the Openai, its activities and intentions for the future of the AI could finally be resolved. In an open letter, the CEO and co-founder of Openai, Sam Altman, described the plans to maintain Openai under the supervision of a non-profit organization. In addition, the company’s benefit side is going to a public service company (PBC).
A PCB is notable because it means that if this part of Openai will always be interested in achieving a profit, it will have a broader objective, which is intended to serve the good of society.
In more practical terms, Altman wrote: “We want to put incredible tools in everyone’s hands … We want to open very capable models. We want to give our users great freedom in the way we let them use our tools in general limits, even if we do not always share the same moral framework, and to leave our users making decisions concerning the behavior of chatgpt.”
In recent years, the former partner and co-founder of Openai, Elon Musk, continued Openai for having left his non-profit roots, and others have expressed their concern about the OPENAI key models and not of source. Altman had previously admitted that he was on the wrong side of this argument, and Musk finally lost his case.
Now, however, Openai and Altman seem to move in the direction that Musk and open source criticism want.
Ai for good
The change of heart comes when Altman admits that at the beginning, “we had no detailed meaning on the way in which we were going to accomplish our mission” and also admitted that some to Openai at the time thought that “should not be in the hands of a few people of trust who could” manage it “.”
The perspective now, however, especially since artificial general intelligence (AG) is on the horizon, is “we want to build a brain for the world and facilitate that people use what they want,” wrote Altman.
The front plan is that OPENAI’s non -profit organization is “the most important and effective non -profit organization in history that will focus on using AI to allow the highest results for people”.
Questions remain
Altman also wants to develop “beneficial act” and notes the importance of security and alignment. “While AI is accelerating, our commitment to security is strengthening. We want to make sure that democratic AI is gaining in authoritarian AI.”
The Altman has traveled a long way since it was suddenly ousted at the end of 2023 by, among others, Ilya Sutskever, former scientist and co-founder of Openai. He returned a few days later. There is a meaning in the new letter that AI and the next AG are larger than a person, a business and an AI like chatgpt.
As for what it will mean for the future of Openai, Chatgpt and AG, it is not clear. The PCB can be focused on the public good, but it will always be interested in making a profit. How the non -profit supervisor has an impact, it is not clear.
OPENAI says he will speak to lawyers general in California and Delaware, who helped him make this decision, as well as his largest trading partner, Microsoft (the basic Copilot models are based on GPT), on the implementation of his new plan.
“We believe that this is preparing to continue to make rapid and safe progress and put a large AI in the hands of all,” wrote Altman.
We will see.
