Like the first episode of This: Welcome to Derry ends, fans are in shock. Today, the show’s creators say that’s exactly what they wanted.
In a conversation with TV guide, Jason Fuchs, co-showrunner, shares: “We always knew we wanted audiences to feel disoriented and disoriented by [the feeling of] “Oh, my God, anything can happen.”
He continues: “The characters we love may not be there…” Forget getting to the end of the season, but get to episode 2! There’s always been this general idea of ”How do we make the audience understand that they expect the unexpected from this series?”
Meanwhile, Andy Muschietti shares that they intentionally led the audience to believe something else from the beginning of the episode. “We kind of presented this little subversion, which is, OK, here are the losers that you’re going to love for the rest of the season.”
“And at the end of [first] In this episode, they all die,” he adds. “We all agreed that it was a great idea. Now we’ll see what people think. But I think it’s that kind of kick in the balls that, for better or worse, is going to shock people and hopefully make them want to keep watching.”
Jason also thanks his co-showrunner, Brad Caleb Kane, for the idea of ending the first episode on a shocking note. “That was really Brad’s contribution, one of the first contributions [he] realized when we joined forces on this subject.
“I had written the pilot, and there was a brutal ending, but it wasn’t the actual ending. There were more survivors,” he notes.
Episode two of This: Welcome to Derry will fall on Friday.
