- OpenAI took a year to make its first billion – now it makes double that every month
- It has 900 million weekly ChatGPT users, 50 million subscribers and 2 million weekly Codex users.
- Enterprises account for about 40% of OpenAI’s revenue as it continues to expand its data center infrastructure.
OpenAI may not be a publicly traded company (yet), but the creator of ChatGPT gave us one of our biggest revenue insights yet, claiming it generates around $2 billion in revenue every month.
Growth is largely driven by enterprise adoption and API usage, but regular ChatGPT subscriptions also weigh on the monthly figure.
The confirmation comes amid plans to “accelerate the next phase of AI”: the company just closed its latest $122 billion funding round to help build the infrastructure, backed by Amazon, Nvidia, SoftBank, Microsoft and others.

OpenAI shares insight into its finances
In addition to banking channels, OpenAI also hosts over $3 billion in personal cash investments from anonymous individuals.
As for the company, in its current state, it has over 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users, including 50 million paying subscribers. “ChatGPT sees 6x more monthly web visits and mobile sessions than the second largest AI app, while total time spent on AI is 4x more than the second largest AI app and 4x all other apps combined,” the company boasts.
Six weeks after launching its advertising pilot, OpenAI has generated more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue, but it’s enterprise customers that constitute the company’s most lucrative source of revenue, accounting for two-fifths of total revenue.
“Our APIs now process over 15 billion tokens per minute. Codex now serves over 2 million weekly users, a 5x increase over the last three months,” the company added.
Looking back, it took a full year since ChatGPT launched for OpenAI to generate its first billion in revenue – a figure it was making a year later, quarterly, not annually.
Looking ahead, OpenAI’s next steps include continuing work on an “AI superapp” to combine ChatGPT, Codex, navigation, and other agentic AI.
Although OpenAI has not officially announced an IPO or filing date, the last year has been filled with rumors of the company going public. However, even if revenues soar, profitability is not as clear and the company could wait until it generates higher margins before expanding into the public eye.
