Pakistan’s telecoms regulator has reiterated that all mobile SIM cards must be registered in the name of the person using them, warning that the use of SIM cards registered by others violates regulations and could result in prosecution.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) advised telecom users to ensure responsible use of their SIM cards and clarified that the registered subscriber would be held fully responsible for any misuse.

“Any SIM card registered in the name of another person and used by someone else is considered a violation of the rules,” the authority said, adding that the responsibility for illegal use lies entirely with the registered user.

The PTA reminded subscribers to only use SIM cards registered in their own name and ensure responsible use of their telecommunications connections. It said users would be individually responsible for all calls, messages and data usage made through their SIM card or device.

The regulator further stressed that compliance with all relevant rules and regulations is mandatory, warning that legal or administrative action could be taken in the event of non-compliance.

This clarification comes as part of authorities’ ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities facilitated by unregistered or misused mobile connections.
