Why MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro Was Shot: Everything We Know

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the global scientific community mourn the tragic death of Professor Nuno Loureiro, a visionary physicist and director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT.

The 47-year-old man was found fatally shot in his Brookline home Monday evening, December 15.

He was then transported to a Boston hospital and was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning, December 16.

The case is currently being investigated as a homicide.

According to preliminary reports, Brookline Police responded to reports of shots fired on Gibbs Street around 8:30 p.m. local time on Monday.

Deputy Superintendent Paul Campbell confirmed one victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds.

So far, police have not made any arrests. The investigation, led by Massachusetts State Police with assistance from MIT and Brookline Police, remains active.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family, students, colleagues and all those who are grieving,” MIT said in a statement.

The university called the loss “immeasurable.”

The investigation into his murder continues.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, December 16, a reporter asked FBI Special Agent Ted Docks about the potential connection between the Brown University shooting and the murder of an MIT professor.

Docks responded that investigations had been conducted to determine whether there was “any intelligence or information” related to the two incidents.

“At the moment there appears to be no connection,” he added.

The investigation into his murder continues. Authorities have increased patrols in the Gibbs Street area and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
