The Higher Minister of Sindh and leader of the Pakistani peoples’ party (PPP), Sharjeel Inam Memon, expressed strong opposition to any channel projects on the Industry river, declaring that he would fight against such initiatives until his last breath.
Addressing a press conference, Memon said that the nation should unite to strengthen Pakistan and take up the challenges he faces, urging the public to put aside their differences during Eidul Fitr, Express News reported.
Memon’s statement follows a recent series of terrorist incidents, where innocent civilians have been murdered in bus attacks. He praised the sacrifices of military and security forces, calling for continuous efforts to protect the nation.
The main minister reiterated the PPP position on controversial channel projects, stressing that the party would demand that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will publish a clear declaration on the judgment of such initiatives. “We will not authorize any channel on the Industry river, and I urge the Prime Minister to announce the cancellation of projects on April 4,” said Memon.
Memon has also referred to criticism, accusing some of being influenced by external forces, particularly appointing those who allegedly support the raw intelligence agency of India.
He stressed that significant dialogue could only take place with those who really support Pakistan.
Stressing the importance of media freedom, Memon reiterated the PPP position on press rights. “The PPP has always worked for journalists’ rights,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring press freedom and will continue to remain firm against any unfair treatment of media staff.”
In addition, Memon criticized the law on the prevention of electronic crimes (PECA), while affirming that the PPP does not support the laws which limit media freedom or allow the spread of false news.
Tackling internal questions, Memon called for a political dialogue in Balutchistan while stressing that the terrorists should be treated firmly.
He concluded by stressing the position of the PPP on human rights and media freedom, saying that the party would continue to fight for these principles.
