- Windows 11 could give you the possibility of defining a video file as a wallpaper
- The option has been spotted in a preview version of the operating system
- It echoes a similar feature that was available in Windows Vista
Windows 11 could give you the possibility of defining a video file as a Wallpaper for your desktopbased on clues in tests.
Windows Central noticed This intrepid leak, Phantomoforeth, plunged again into Windows 11 overview versions and found the feature to select a video file as a background.
You can see how it works in the post below on X, which shows an MP4 video chosen as a wallpaper.
Windows Dreamscene is back! Hidden in the latest version of Windows 11 Dev / Beta (26×20.6690) is built in support to define video files as .MP4 as a desktop: pic.twitter.com/b4vdtfvqScSeptember 20, 2025
It is possible to use any common video file format (not only MP4, but also MOV, AVI, WMV and more) and the clip will be read each time you display the office, apparently (not completed again and again, because it could become irritating, without any doubt).
Do not forget, however, this is hidden in the tests in current development versions and beta of Windows 11 (and activated via a Windows configuration utility), so we do not know how it will work when Microsoft officially implements it in preview – or even if it will ever be put online in the tests. The idea could simply be abandoned.
The return of an old friend
As the leak points out, the video wallpapers were part of Windows Vista for those who spent for the ultimate publishing (as part of the feature called Windows Dreamscene). Video wallpapers have been missing in the Windows recipe for a long time, but it seems that Microsoft is at least planning to reintroduce this ingredient.
For the moment, if you want a video wallpaper, you have to use a third -party application (the wallpaper engine is generally recommended, or Dandscapes 11 in Stardock). It would be good to have this capacity integrate directly into Windows 11, rather than having to count on external software.
Okay, so everyone does not want to have a video background by all means, and there is already a certain concern expressed in relation to the way in which this functionality could consume.
This could be a particular concern for those who use Windows 11 on a laptop In terms of decreasing battery longevity, but if you don’t want to execute such risks, you don’t have to use video wallpaper. If it happens in Windows 11, that is to say, because as indicated, Microsoft can still delete this idea.
However, with Fancy backgrounds and animations available on macOS – including time sensitive Dynamic wallpapers – and various Linux distrosIt seems likely that Microsoft would like to catch up. That said, we heard rumors on Dynamic wallpapers (powered by AI in Windows 11 beforeWho came to nothing, so we will have to continue to look at these preview builds.
