- Apple does not merge iPados and MacOS, says that the Craig Federighi of the company
- This “would lose what makes iPad iPad,” said Federighi
- iPados 26 try to balance the simplicity and functionalities of the energy user
Spend enough time in Apple’s ecosystem and you will hear a question appear again and again: “Apple will he never merge its iPads and Mac?” Whether the question is asked by a seasoned journalist or your uncle when you come to visit, many people want to know the answer.
After a WWDC 2025 where iPados 26 was equipped with a lot of Mac type features – from improved window management to a menu bar on the screen – this question has raised the head again. However, this is something that Apple has just come out head -on.
In an interview with the journalist of Swiss technology Rafael Zeier (via Macrumors), the Apple software manager, Craig Federighi, says so: “With MacOS, you would lose what makes the iPad iPad, which is the ultimate touchscathe. But there are a lot that the two platforms can learn from each other, and this is where we adapted our best ideas for each. ”
In other words, MacOS Tahoe is simply not designed for tablets. But while putting the macOS in its own right on an iPad may not make sense for the moment, Apple is always happy to borrow ideas on each platform and to distribute them around its products – as we have seen in WWDC.
Do iPados and macOS never merge?
So why not just leave the completely separated iPados and macOS? Why share the features between platforms, which inevitably leads to questions about the fusion of iPads and Macs?
According to Federighi, “we want to keep all the simplicity of the iPad but always allow iPad users who want to go further and further to push it to their pace to do more.” This means adding features that can improve the experience for more demanding users, without adding unnecessary complexity.
To this end, Apple has designed its new iPados features so that you can essentially activate and deactivate multi-window mode. If you prefer the old way of working, with full applications that do not overlap, you can use it. If you want to use multiple windows as you can in macOS, you can go to this mode.
However, there is another consideration: the rumor that Apple plans to launch a 19 -inch foldable device that blurs the line between the iPad and the Mac. This should be launched around 2028, and it will be fascinating to see how Apple software manages such a product. Maybe we will finally know if Apple never plans to merge iPados and MacOS.
