A factory worker of Lahore was violently assaulted, allegedly for having taken a day off, which caused a widespread conviction and calls for stronger work protections.
The incident occurred in the Manawan region and was revealed after a video circulated on social networks showing several people beating the worker, identified as AFTAB.
According to the victim’s family, Aftab had taken leave in a private facial and worked elsewhere for a day, by angry the owner of the mill, identified as Umar.
AFTAB would have been beaten on Umar’s orders on his return to help some former colleagues looking for work.
Police initially declared that the victim had withdrawn his complaint after allegedly accepted the employer’s additional payment. AFTAB would also have informed the police in writing not to continue the case.
However, later in the day, the captain of the canton (R) Qazi Ali Raza confirmed that an official case had been registered against Umar and three unidentified people following the public outcry and an examination of the incident.
