- Knowledge workers fear AI will take their jobs
- They spend on average 4.3 hours/week in meetings, they say
- Asynchronous communication could improve productivity
One in three (35%) knowledge workers have now mastered the skills needed to protect their job security against AI threats, and one in five are now stressed or anxious about being replaced by AI, according to a new study.
An Adaptavist study found that nearly a third (32%) of entry-level positions have disappeared since 2022, the company found, further intensifying fears.
As a result, two-fifths (38%) are hesitant to train their colleagues in their area of strength so that they can continue to stand out, in the hope of retaining their role.
Knowledge workers feel threatened by AI
The study found that knowledge workers spend an average of 4.3 hours per week in meetings, almost as much time as they spend socially with their friends (4.4 hours). With the rise of hybrid and remote working, meeting duration has tripled since 2020.
Currently, almost half (46%) have seen colleagues send AI assistants to meetings on their behalf, but many (40%) consider this to be rude compared to personally attending meetings.
However, Adaptavist sees a place for AI within organizations, and its role is not at all to replace human workers.
Adaptavist calls on companies to move toward asynchronous communication, where workers can collaborate during their own work hours without having to be called into meetings at a fixed time.
“By adopting asynchronous communication, improving documentation, and using AI to surface relevant insights, organizations can reduce meeting fatigue while building resilient, aligned teams,” commented Neal Riley, Chief Innovation Officer.
With well-implemented AI, workers feel more energized and motivated, more in control of their tasks, and less frustrated or disconnected.
“The report confirms that when organizations integrate AI into this structured approach, they build cultures where employees feel part of the journey,” added Riley.
