Bono was an omnipresent presence for most of my adult life. I had just come to the world when the album break out of U2, Wararrived, and in 1987OshuaBono and the main guitarist Edge seemed essential. In other words, I saw the singer U2 Bono as less an enigma and more a contemporary.
We are both ancient men now, licking our psychic wounds and (in the case of Bono) revealing them enigmatically in the world in, first, the well -received memories of 2022, Surrender: 40 songs, a story, And now as an unusual and musical journey, Bono: Survey stories – The first immersive video feature film never released on vision pro. It is a joyful guided tour, funny, sad, sometimes frustrating and often intense through Bono’s life and career.
Above all, however, it is a story of Bono (Paul Hewson) and “Da” his deeply Irish father, Bob Hewson.
Apple provided me with an overview of the film, which I saw almost entirely via the mixed reality headset of $ 3,499 from Apple. There was, because of the way Apple insisted that I accede to video, certain technical problems (occasional freezing), but it was generally an immersive and often moving experience.
Shot almost entirely in black and white Stark, the film is both an oratory of a single man and an occasional musical performance. Director Andrew Dominik uses the vast canvas of nearly 360 degrees of pro vision to literally paint scenes around Bono, as the singer tells particularly Irish tales, for example, his mother suddenly dying when he was only 14 years old, and his father never speaking the name of his wife again.
The scene is free, with a little more than a few chairs, a table and a false pint of Guinness. But Dominik uses native 3D 3D immersive capacities to embellish the scene and imagery.
Using the drawing of the 3D line, Bono is, even if he occurs or speaks in front of an audience live, surrounded by points by words, members of the public drawn by hand or boxes and papers that seem to reach the sky above you.
It is not a concert or a U2 performance. At the beginning, Bono admits that it is “almost transgressive”, to be on stage without his group comrades. Instead, Bono is supported by the Jacknife Lee Ensemble, which has an electronic battery kit and a keyboard / backup singer. It doesn’t look like much, but it works.
In fact, Bono, now 65, is in good voice, which is clear, noisy and agile. It becomes less surprising when you learn that his father was a gifted tenor. Late in the film, Bono is part of his own opera song, clearly a tribute to his late father.
There are musical performances and even for a few moments in the vision pro experience where you have the impression of being from nose to nose with the singer emblematic (it’s disturbing), but most of the song is done to support stories, or rather, stories explain the origins of songs like Pride,, With or without youAnd Sunday, bloody Sunday.
There is a decent quantity of humor, in particular a story on Luciano Pavarotti, but more importantly, you get the original story of Bono’s musical interests and the group’s training, which has coincided with the meeting of his wife for over 40 years, Ali Hewson.
The documentary begins a little slowly and perhaps melodramatically, with Bono’s cardiac surgery in 2016, and even if I am deeply grateful that Bono survived, I feared that the whole Doc of about 90 minutes was a little slog. Fortunately, this painful story was only the preamble, and soon, Bono woven an entertaining story of pride, struggles and epiphanies.
It was, however, frustrating to hear the story behind I will follow And do not get a complete performance of the song. I admit that I wanted more of U2’s discography, although Bono’s new interpretations, like almost a cappella Sunday, bloody Sunday, were superb.
In the end, this Bono: Survey stories Go too fast, and it ends just when you feel that you finally get to know the real bono, a short singer with big stories and, I think, an even bigger heart. It is still not an enigma, but for the first time in 40 years, I have the impression that I could just want to spend time with him.
As for the pro vision, he did a brilliant job. 90 minutes, it’s long to wear the mixed reality headset (it was 10% battery at the end), so make sure you have a comfortable adjustment. Mine is good (I use the double -looped strip), although I made some breaks.
You can look Bono: Survey stories From today on The Vision Pro (for the special immersive experience) or on Apple TV +, where I suspect that you will appreciate it just as much.
