- Google added flashcards, quizzes and smarter chat to the NotebookLM mobile app
- These customizable study tools were previously only available on desktop computers
- The update also improves the Gemini-based chat option and provides longer context and memory on mobile devices.
Google’s NotebookLM brings some of its best AI-powered study features to its mobile app and thereby improves its chat experience. You can now create flashcards and quizzes based on the sources you download, even when you walk into a classroom for a test.
NotebookLM started as an AI assistant for students, but has since grown into a broader platform for processing information in documents, written notes, and even YouTube videos into formats that could be more useful for learning. This includes flashcards and quizzes released earlier this year for desktop computers.
For those who have used NotebookLM primarily on a laptop, the move to mobile isn’t just about portability. It’s about reducing the distance between intention and action. You can learn basic concepts while waiting for coffee, take a quiz before bed, or create flashcards on the bus home.
NotebookLM is designed to let you download and annotate sources, ask questions about your documents, and extract information from long documents. It extracts PDFs, transcripts, lecture notes, really anything with text,
Until now, the application mainly passively mirrored the capabilities of the desktop version. You can view and scroll, but not fully engage. You can now customize flashcards and quizzes by setting the topic, difficulty level and duration.
Study trip
The update adds flexibility to these sources by allowing you to temporarily select or deselect the sources that the AI uses to generate its answers and quizzes. This is a big problem if you’ve downloaded dozens of materials and don’t want a quiz to be pulled from the wrong week’s material. It adds a layer of control that’s especially useful when you’re on the go and less likely to navigate file settings.
The chat’s improvements aren’t just cosmetic. They fundamentally change the way users can interact with their notes. A longer pop-up window means the AI can follow more of your study session, providing the kind of continuity that mobile AI tools typically lack. So while it won’t automatically earn you an A, it will at least help you keep all the details you need to remember in mind until it’s time to start the exam.
