- Amazon has just achieved a regulation of $ 2.5 billion with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
- On the total sum, $ 1.5 billion will cover customer reimbursements
- Many Amazon Prime users could be eligible for a refund, but there are some warnings
Amazon recently decided to settle in his big case against the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), accepting a massive payment of $ 2.5 billion instead of continuing a trial.
The allegations against Amazon understood that the company made it difficult to cancel first -rate subscriptions and that it had scored people with an entirely enlightened subscription. Amazon did not admit any reprehensible act in the case, but decided to settle down rather than to face years of appeal.
Here is everything you need to know to find out if you are eligible for a refund and how to claim it if you do.
What happened with the Amazon Prime colony?
The complaint specified that Amazon had used “dark models” to encourage people to register or renew their main subscriptions. In addition, the FTC said that the cancellation of a prime subscription was too complicated, with too many roadblocks on the way.
Amazon denies any reprehensible act, but he agreed to revise the way in which Prime is presented, disclosed and canceled. In a statementA company spokesman said: “Amazon and our managers have always followed the law, and these regulations allow us to move forward and focus on innovation for customers.”
The FTC establishes a historic regulation of $ 2.5 billion against Amazon. The agency allegedly allegedly used misleading methods to register consumers for privileged subscriptions and made it extremely difficult to cancel: https://t.co/c6e1tpigdiSeptember 25, 2025
What is the size of Amazon Prime reimbursement? The regulations put aside $ 1.5 billion specifically for consumer reimbursements, but of course, the actual amount that a person can obtain is limited.
The FTC estimates that millions of Amazon Prime users could be eligible, so that the payment amount will be capped up to $ 51 per person. This figure is based on the distribution of the reimbursement pool on all approved complaints, so all users will not necessarily receive the maximum amount.
Who will qualify for the reimbursement of Amazon Prime?
To qualify for the reimbursement of Amazon Prime, you must have registered in the service between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025.
If you tried to cancel Prime during this period but you did not end up doing it, you also qualified. Trying to cancel has been defined as starting the process, but not finishing it, or being tempted to stay subscribed. The regulations only apply to customers in the United States.
How do you check when you registered at a bonus? Go to the Amazon application (or website) and go to Account> memberships and subscriptionsthen press ‘Payment history’. You can scroll down to see your main payment history.
How will reimbursements be treated?
Whether you get your refund automatically or not depends on the customer group to which you belong.
The first group, eligible for automatic payment, includes the Amazon Prime subscribers who have registered via a “difficult registration flow”. In other words, a process that has made it difficult to cancel your subscription. This refers to any version of:
- The first universal decision page
- The Select the shipping option
- The main video registration flow
- The cash register on one page
Eligible customers cannot use more than three privileged advantages during their subscription. This means advantages that you would not have received without being a privileged member and probably includes video streaming or free delivery.
If you are part of this first wave of payments, you don’t need to submit a complaint. Amazon will distribute payments according to the total amount of membership fees paid during your subscription (a maximum of $ 51), and you can expect to obtain your payment within 90 days.
The second group of customers will have to request reimbursements. To qualify, you must register through a disputed registration flow (as indicated above) or has tried without success to cancel your subscription. You also cannot have used any of your main advantages more than 10 times during a 12 -month subscription period.
Customers who fall under the criteria of the second wave of payments will have to fill out a form.
The Amazon Prime reimbursement process
We are currently only at the first wave of the process, where automatic reimbursements will be treated for those who have registered by a “disputed registration flow” (see above) and have not used more than three privileged advantages within 12 months.
Unfortunately, Wave Two providers will have to wait, because Amazon has not yet sent the reimbursement form or created a website with details on the complaint process. It will only be available once Wave One customers will have all their payments.
Once the website is live, you can apparently access it from the Amazon website and the Amazon Prime page, according to the FTC.
Within 30 days of the Amazon regulation to their automatic payments, anyone eligible for this second wave will be informed by e-mail (and letters sent). This will tell you how to fill out the form, and you will have 180 days to do so (from the day of reception). The email must contain links to the website where you can submit your complaint.
You can do so by e-mail, first-class pre-paid first class costs or directly on the Amazon Settlement website. We do not currently know when this second part of the process begins, but we will update this guide once it will.
