- Microsoft could abandon the need to set up Windows 11 with a Microsoft account
- Company executive says software engineers work there
- There is no indication yet on when the change might be implemented.
Microsoft has informed users that there are big improvements coming to Windows 11 – improvements covering the amount of AI appearing in the software, how updates are handled, and more – and the operating system setup process could also get a welcome change.

Being able to set up a Windows 11 computer without having to sign in to a Microsoft account is another thing that’s likely to prove popular with users – as you can see if you read some of the comments below Handselman’s post.
Put users first
While it is still technically possible to configure Windows 11 without a Microsoft account, the workarounds are rather technical and tricky. The local account option has been phased out of the software over the years.
As we’ve written in the past, this takes away users’ choice and flexibility, and there are undoubtedly some users who would prefer not to link their copy of Windows 11 to a Microsoft account – or even have a Microsoft account at all.
That Scott Hanselman says it’s also something he hates is significant. This shows that Microsoft is willing to change features to benefit end users rather than putting the company’s best interests first.
Although there is still a lot of work to be done to restore user trust and goodwill, Microsoft is doing well so far (and it’s only March). As of yet, there’s no indication of when this might roll out – and aside from Scott Hanselman’s post on X, there’s no official confirmation that the change will happen.
