- The August update for Windows 11 and 10 broke the recovery features
- This includes options to reset the PC and solve problems using the Windows update
- All these elements do not work after the most recent corrective, but fortunately, Microsoft has now deployed a fix
Microsoft has precipitated an emergency solution for an problem caused by the most recent Windows 11 update (and the Windows 10 patch), which has reset and recovery features that are designed to save your PC when it has serious problems.
The Bleeping computer identified Microsoft’s announcement from the publication of the fix which was delivered as an update “ out of the group ”, which means that it is a cumulative update which has been deployed outside the usual calendar.
It is the resolution of a bug affecting the powers of reset of Windows 11 (versions 11:2 p.m. and 10:2 p.m.) and Windows 10 (10:2 p.m.), which was introduced with the August updates that arrived for these operating systems last week. The remedy is packed in cumulative updates which are the same as these original August fixes, except to have the packaged fix also.
If you have installed Microsoft’s August fix and you run one of the affected Windows versions, you must therefore install this new update at the top. It is labeled KB5066189 for Windows 11 and KB5066188 for Windows 10, and you can find it by checking the updates in the Windows update panel. Note that it will appear in optional updates.
If you have not yet installed the August fix, you just have to apply it instead (from optional updates).
Analysis: The path to recovery leads to an impasse
I must clearly indicate that this affects all versions of Windows 10 and 11 which are in charge – with the exception of the latest version of Windows 11, 24h2. It is rare that those of Windows 11 24h2 are not struck by a bug – These people have suffered the most since the release of the Microsoft desktop operating system.
As for the details of what the bug in question breaks, it is the possibility of resetting the PC, which allows you to return the system to its original state – essentially a reinstalling Windows 11 – or reset and keep your personal data (but not applications or parameters). A second option to “solve problems using Windows update” is also assigned, which is essentially the same as this last reset option, where you keep your personal files, but this also keeps applications and settings – so it is a question of reinstalling the Windows system itself.
Due to the problem, all of these processes will fail, which will obviously leave you a lot in the Luch when it comes to trying to recover from a problem. You will not be able to go nowhere, although the bug itself will not cause any prejudice to the state of your PC. Reset or recovery procedure will simply fall.
These are not features that you will have to use often – hopefully – and therefore the effect of this bug may not have been felt widely initially (which probably explains why the defect has not been revealed immediately). However, it will be quite boring if you need a reset or repair for your Windows 11 or 10 PC – because, obviously, things are not going well with the operating system if you use such measures – hence the reason why Microsoft quickly pushed this fix.
