- From August 21, the price of all PlayStation 5 consoles increases by $ 50
- The standard PS5 will be $ 549.99, while the PS5 Pro goes to $ 749.99
- PS5 accessories – and consoles in other regions – remain unchanged
Sony announced that it would increase the recommended retail price of PlayStation 5 in the United States.
In an article on the official PlayStation blog, the manufacturer said that “a difficult economic environment” led to the “difficult decision” of the price of all $ 50 PS5 consoles.
This means that from August 21, the price of the standard PS5 console will drop from $ 499.99 to $ 549.99. The cheaper PS5 digital edition will also see a leap from $ 449.99 to $ 499.99. Finally, the Premium PS5 PRO will drop from $ 699.99 to $ 749.99 – Yikes!
In another positive news in the middle of all gloom, Sony has at least confirmed that the price of PlayStation 5 accessories will remain unchanged. Thus, everything, from the DualSense controller to the vertical stand will no longer be expensive and will remain at the current price for the moment.
If it was not clear enough what is the reasoning behind these price increases, Sony added a final note to the update, declaring that it has no other price changes to announce for other markets. These price increases are only for the United States and are almost certainly due to current chaos caused by American prices.
Sony is not the only manufacturer of game consoles to announce price increases in the United States this month. In early August, Nintendo also increased the price of various switching consoles up to $ 50. These increases applied to the original Nintendo switch, the Lite switch and the OLED switch. The latest Nintendo Switch 2 has remained intact, but some of the new console accessories have received lower price increases.
Of course, retailers have a certain room for maneuver on the opportunity to follow the new prices of PS5 consoles from tomorrow, but given the number of people who immediately responded to the changes in Nintendo Switch prices, I would not be surprised if all are implemented as soon as possible. This means, buy now if you want to secure an economy, because it is likely that it will only be the same prices that we now see the return of Black Friday.
We have approached five years since the launch date of the original PS5, and although the price has fluctuated in many regions, an increase in coverage like this is unknown so late in the life cycle of a console.
Most of us expect older consoles to become cheaper, not more expensive – especially hunters like me who always try to find the best offers for the most sought -after technology. These are unusual times.
