The emblematic monal restaurant falls negligently

Islamabad:

Once majestically perched at the top of Pir Sohawa, the Monal restaurant was one of the most emblematic monuments of Islamabad. Over the years, it has become more than a place of restoration – it was a symbol of the hospitality and natural splendor of Pakistan. Tourists around the world, diplomats and residents flocked to Monal to enjoy its panoramic views, its authentic cuisine and the unique experience of eating above the clouds. For many, it was a proud showcase of the cultural richness of Pakistan.

However, the closure of Monal by the former chief judge Qazi Faez Isa radically modified the fate of this gem of the hill. The Supreme Court, at the time, said the illegal establishment, citing its construction on the protected land of Margalla National Park. Although the court order could have been motivated by environmental concerns, the consequences shocked and saddened a lot.

Today, the space formerly associated with family meetings, celebrations and international tourism would have become a hub for obscenity and immorality. The videos and reports circulating on social networks suggest that the abandoned premises are poorly used for naked performance, vulgar shows and activities which not only undermine the sacred character of the site but also tarnish the cultural and moral image of Islamabad.

This tragic transformation has aroused generalized anger and dismay. “When Monal was operational, it was a symbol of pride. Families felt safe, and visitors left with a positive impression of Pakistan. Now it has become the opposite – a shameful show,” said a resident concerned.

Critics argue that if the closure may have been intended to protect the environment, the decision lacked provident. Rather than preserving the land or reusing it for constructive use, the closure has created a vacuum, allowing immoral activities to flourish without control.

The irony is austere: a place formerly celebrated to bring families together and promoting tourism has now become synonymous with obscenity. This raises serious questions about the governance, the application and the consequences of decisions made without considering practical realities. Islamabad, renowned for its serene beauty and cultural modesty, cannot afford to let such a degradation continue.

The authorities must act quickly, either by recovering and rehabilitating the site, or by establishing strict surveillance to ensure that it does not remain a reproductive ground for moral and social disintegration. The story of Monal serves as an edifying story: without vision and responsible planning, even the most expensive monuments can fall into ruins, leaving only regret and embarrassment.
