Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, XAI, filed a complaint before a federal court in Texas against Apple and Openai, accusing them of plotting to prevent fair competition on the AI market, Reuters reported.
The complaint alleys that Apple and Openai “locked up the markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and Xai from competing”.
He claims that Apple’s partnership with Openai, which has integrated Chatgpt into iPhones, iPads and Macs, has unjustly tilted the market.
“If it is not for its exclusive agreement with OPENAI, Apple would have no reason to refrain further in application X and the GROK application in its application store,” said the trial.
XAI is looking for billions of dollars in damages. An Openai spokesperson replied that “this last deposit conforms to the current harassment of Mr. Musk”. Apple did not immediately comment.
Musk had warned earlier this month that Apple’s behavior “prevents an IA company in addition to Openai from reaching No. 1 in the App Store”.
Antitrust experts say the case could be essential. Apple dominates the smartphone market, and its exclusive agreement with OpenAi can strengthen XAI’s assertions.
But legal researchers noted that Apple could say that he acted in a competitive environment and does not have the duty to strengthen his rivals.
The trial could become the first of the American courts to define the scope of the AI market.
Christine Bartholomew, professor of law at the University of Buffalo, said: “It is a canary in the coal mine in terms of court treatment and will treat antitrust and AI.”
