During last week Made by Google Event, we had an early overview of what seemed to be a new smart speaker Google Nest (sitting discreetly on a table next to the F1 Lando Norris driver). Now, three other devices seem to have disclosed: a new version of the video doorbell Nest and a pair of home security cameras. The details are graceful of the big titles of Android, which did not reveal the identity of its source, but which included several images which seem to come from marketing equipment to support its claims.
Based on the specifications provided so far, it looks very much like Google who fights against Amazon, in competition with Echo speakers and sonnets and cameras.
We do not yet have a price and dates of publication for new devices Nest, but it seems unlikely that Google is able to compete with the cost alone. Amazon products are some of the cheapest intelligent household appliances, so Google is probably based on the power of gemini for the house to give it the advantage. This could do that, because Alexa + continues to deploy at a glacial rate, but we will have to do two times with the two before we can compare the two directly.
Regarding prices, Google is apparently renamed Nest aware of Google Home Premium, with several paid levels. These will probably operate in the same way of Ring Home, with the most expensive option offering support for more devices, additional storage for videos and additional features powered by AI. Personally, I hope a package that brings together the best features of Google One Premium with Google Home Premium at a lower price than the two distinct services, but I will not hold my breath.
Unlike Amazon, Google is also faced with a serious problem with disappointed users who claim that their intelligent home devices no longer work as announced, throwing error messages or not recognizing orders. In fact, there are so many complaints that an American law firm announced that it had “started investigating a possible collective appeal”.
The new devices will have to be something really special to reverse the steam, so let’s take a closer look.
Speaker nest with 360 -degree audio
First of all, the speaker. The first details are rare – we have already assumed that it would have Google Gemini – but the mystery source of the titles of Android gleaned some extracts of interesting information.
The new speaker will apparently offer interesting features fed by AI, one of which will detect when you are absent and be careful to worry about sounds that suggest that someone could try to enter your home. This would link the speaker to your home security system, with the doorbell and two safety cams, it is therefore logical that Google apparently launches the trio as they and ears powered by AI to keep your home.
We were not told anything about silicon responsible for all this, but the new speaker Nest is probably much more powerful than his predecessors, who were released before AI begins to make his way in our homes, and therefore had much more modest treatment requirements.
The only other Titbits that have been revealed are that the new Nest speaker will offer 360 degree sound and can be associated with a Google TV streamer. It seems that this is somewhere between the Nest Mini and Nest Audio existing, aimed at providing the best of both worlds with a relatively compact design and respectable audio quality.
Its closest rival seems to be the 4th generation Amazon echo, but 360 -degree sound of the nest and the inclusion of Gemini for the house could give it two great advantages. Although the Echo rings well and can be associated with a Fire TV streamer, his speaker is forward and he has not yet received the promised upgrade to Alexa +.
Amazon has promised that his assistant AI will arrive at his existing smart speakers, but did not say when, and I suppose that most treatments will have to occur in the cloud due to the less powerful Echo processor, which could cause more latency than you will have with the new Google Nest speaker.
Doorbell with local storage (in a way)
Let’s take a look at the new nest bell. Based on its specifications, it seems that Google will be in competition directly with the doorbell of the current wired video, but personally, I think it is a risky strategy.
Video bells have been a long way in recent years, and although Ring could always be the biggest name, it faces strong competition from its competitors like Swann and Eufy, whose bells can store all your images locally on an SD card without the need for a paying monthly plan (for more details, take a look at my guide on the video expressions).
According to the big titles of Android, the new doorbell of the nest will have a few Local storage, but only as a backup option in case it loses internet connectivity. He will keep an hour of video for you, but will not be an alternative to the storage of the paid cloud.
The 2K resolution of the new nest is another potentially limiting factor. In the past year, we have tested a few models that can record at 4K (namely the Swannbuddy4k and Lorex 4K battery doorbell, and I would not be surprised if we see a 4K ring bell in the next year. By publishing a 2K model at the end of 2025, Google may be left behind.
Judging by the 3D rendering disclosed, it seems that Google’s new bell will have only one camera, which also surprises me. It is now standard that video bells have two cameras for a larger vertical field of vision, which allows them to capture the faces of visitors as well as packages left at your door, with equal clarity. Without a lower camera, the nest model may not be able to effectively “see” packages, potentially leaving them vulnerable to porch pirates.
Then there is the price. The last ring door to ring costs only $ 49.99 / £ 49.99 / $ 89 in, while the most recent nest video door was launching of $ 179.99 / £ 249.99 $ 329 at. It is unlikely that Google will lower its prices to match Ring, so I can only assume that it composes on gemini to give the new doorbell of nest video.
According to the disclosed specifications, the new nest bell will offer features, including activity zones, garage door alerts and familiar face alerts – which will all be familiar to current nest bell owners – as well as new smart alerts that will send you a notification when an animal, a person or a vehicle will be identified. Other bells offer something similar, so the success of the nest bell will depend on speed and precision and the way in which the software can avoid false positives.
“Who will hear red cameras?”
For me, the new interior and exterior security cameras seem much more tempting than the doorbell. The two are wired, although it is possible that Google can release a model powered by battery on a later date.
Again, Google seems to aim for the ring lunch, and its new cams seem to be direct competitors with rechargeable versions of the interior camera and the outdoor security camera, but there are significant differences.
The most obvious of them is their conception. We are fans of affordable and functional cams from Nest here in Techradar, and they regularly find a place in our overview of the best security cameras at home, but I must admit that they are not particularly easy to the eye. It is certainly a case of function on the form.
The new nest cams have a more user -friendly look, with rounded bodies and frames, and would be available in a range of colors – not only in black and white – so that you can choose something that will mix better with your decor (or stand out, in the case of the red model).
Commentators on Google Home Sudreddit generally seem to be suitable that the red option is a horror, but personally, I like it as a way to let people know that they are saved – like a large red “REC” button in your living room. You might think the opposite, however.
The only potential design plan for me is the absence of physical intimacy coverage on the inner cam. This would protect the lens and the microphone when you want a moment for yourself, and is one of the features that we appreciated during the test of the last interior camera.
The two new Google cameras will record at 2k, while the cameras with equivalent rings are limited to 1080p, and you will get the same alerts and notifications powered by gemini as you also do with the new door to the nest door
Again, according to Android titles, there will be a limited quantity of local storage in case the camera loses Wi-Fi connectivity.
