- AMD FSR 4 performance is slightly lower than FSR 3, based on a new SDK 2.0 Fidelityfx Demo test
- The difference in performance is only 5%, which is not significant, but can be at much lower image frequencies or lower GPUs
- FSR 4 can always be the best choice for DNR 4 GPU users
The AMD FSR improvement technology has traveled a long way to offer excellent performance and visual quality, with the jump from FSR 3 to FSR 4 by serving as proof, especially on one of the best GPUs on the market – but there is a socket.
The new FidelityFX SDK 2.0 tests from the enthusiast of Osvaldo Pinali technology (Opinali on X) present the FSR 4 tax on performances in games compared to FSR 3. Using the RX 9070 XT radeon in a FSR demonstration, FSR 3.1.5 provides 290 FPS, while FSR 4.0.2 FPS.
The new SDK (software development kit) widens the FSR 4 support with increased access to developers for the integration of the game, which has also briefly seen FSR 4 Full Open -Source before AMD withdraws it from GitHub – which points the efforts of the FSR 4 portage Red to the older GPUs.
Without lighting up, Pinali essentially discovered that FSR 4 had a GPU use of 37% higher, probably because of its AI functionality based on automatic learning (ML). However, the difference in image frequency between FSR 3 and FSR 4 in the SDK 2.0 FidelityFX test is only 5%, which is simply not significant to hinder performance in games.
Improvements of the visual quality of FSR 4 compared to the FSR 3 are undoubtedly night and day; It is not as good as the NVIDIA DLSS 4 offer, but it is an excellent alternative, and has already exceeded DLSS 3 in terms of quality of super-resolution.
When the 5% difference can have a slightly greater impact, it is with lower DNR 4 GPUs, or in games that require working, which have much lower average image frequencies.
In the sample, I can choose the FSR version. With FG OFF, VSYNC OFF: 9070 XT, FSR 3.1.5: 290FPS9070 XT, FSR 4.0.2: 276FPSRTX 5080, FSR 3.1.5: 356FPSUPSCALAY The time is FSR3.1 = 0.51 ms, FSR4 = 0.70 m. FSR4 costs + 37% GPU; Another small fraction of a total frame even for this simple demo.August 23, 2025
Analysis: If AMD can do the Backport FSR 4 to older GPUs, this could be an alternative Nvidia Dlss 4 stronger
It is undeniable that NVIDIA leads to the GPU market and scaling technology. DLSS 4 is available on all RTX GPUs and does fantastic work to ensure that image quality is excellent, even when using its performance modes.
While FSR 4 does a similar thing from FSR 3, the problem is that it is not enough to directly challenge DLSS 4, and FSR 4 is exclusive to DNA 4 GPUs. This comes back to ML -based technology and advanced equipment in DNA 4, but if it becomes available on older equipment, Team Red will be placed in a better position against Nvidia in terms of scaling.
I use an NVIDIA GPU, so that does not affect me quite, but it will be interesting to see how a potential backport of FSR 4 will have an impact on the IGPU RDNA 3.5 on portable game PCs.
