- The state of Nevada says it has undergone a “network security incident”
- Although he is not officially described as a cyber attack, he certainly resembles a ransomware attack
- There is no evidence of stolen files yet
The offices, websites and telephone lines of the government of the state of Nevada were all made unavailable and put out of line following an apparent cyber attack.
Official account X of the Press Lombardo Governor’s office has published an announcement indicating that the state of Nevada “has identified a network security incident”.
For the moment, this article has been written, the website was still offline, displaying only one message, saying “the requested URL has been rejected. Please see your administrator. “
Was it a ransomware attack?
“While the State is continuing its recovery efforts, the network security incident continues to have an impact on the availability of certain state technological systems on the state network,” added the ad. “Certain state websites or telephone lines may be slow or briefly unavailable during recovery.”
The way the announcement is written does not suggest that it was a cyber attack, but with several offline services, an in -law survey, and the state that seeks to restore the services one by one, everything bears the brands of a ransomware attack.
Ransomware attacks also generally include data theft, criminals exfiltrating sensitive files to use as a lever in case the victim could restore their services via backups.
In this case, however, Nevada says that there is currently no evidence that any personally identifiable information (PII) has been compromised.
At the time of the press, no threat player has assumed the responsibility of the attack, but the ransomware against the American State and local governments were historically led by financially motivated criminal groups rather than by actors sponsored by the State.
Some of the best -known ransomware gangs that have targeted American government entities include Lockbit, BlackCat / Alphv, CL0P, Royal and Vice Society.
According to a PK Press Club Report, the cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency also published a statement, saying that it “actively followed this network security incident and with our partners, we collaborate with the state of Nevada to offer our aid”.
